Eight of the fourteen eight-thousanders are located in the country, either in whole or shared across a border with China or India including Mount Everest which the highest mountain in the world Kanchenjunga, Lhotse, Makalu, Cho Oyu, Dhaulagiri, Manaslu and Annapurna,which are all over 8,000 m above sea level,Besides these eight giant peaks, there are 326 other mountains within Nepal which are open for mountaineering expeditions and out of them, 103 have never been climbed before. This makes Nepal a must travel destination for travellers seeking adventures such as mountaineering, mountain flight, trekking, sky-diving and other activities that are done around the mountains. Nepal has designated the Annapurna, Manaslu and Kanchenjunga regions as Conservation Areas while Sagarmatha (Everest), Langtang and Shey-Phoksundo (Dolpo) are national parks while other mountain areas might not fall into these categories but are designated as ‘Restricted Areas’ as they are close to Nepal’s northern border.

The five treasures of the snow, Mount Kanchenjunga is the third highest peak in the world with five prominent mountains.

 The mountains peaks of Kanchenjunga are held as sacred and holy by the people of both Nepal and India making it an off-the-beaten-paths trekking experience.

 There is a legend that originates from the local Lhopo people’s beliefs that says that the five treasures of Kanchenjunga are hidden in the mountain slopes

With the most romantic peaks of the world also known as the ‘a wall of glacial blue ice’, Lhotse is the fourth highest mountain in the world and is a part of the Mount Everest massif.  Lhotse is a popular alternative to Mount Everest and shares much of the same route as Everest. In addition to the main summit, there are two subsidiary peaks. Lhotse Shar, which is immediately east of the main summit, and Nuptse, a high peak on the Mountain’s West Ridge.

Named after the Hindu God, ‘Lord Shiva’, the fifth highest mountain in the world, Mount Makalu is an isolated peak that lies 14 miles (22 kilometers) southeast of Mount Everest on the border between China and Nepal. Its size alone is impressive, but its structure that of a perfect pyramid with four sharp ridges makes this highest mountain of the world all the more spectacular. This place is full of dangerous rocks and curves which make it the most interesting peak to climb.

Dhaulagiri I

Location: The Khumbu. Part of the Mahalangur Himalayan Range

First Ascenders: Pasang Dawa Lama, Herbert Tichy and Joseph Jöchler.

The meaning of Mount Cho Oyu is a turquoise goddess. It is so-called because of its cerulean tincture. ount Cho Oyu lies at the westernmost section of the Mahalangur Himalayan range and is considered as the easiest climbable peak of 8,000 meters. The mountain also makes up a part of the glaciated High Pass mainly used for trading by the Tibetan and Nepali traders. Long caravans of yaks and mules can be seen all year long on the pass. Because of its easy routes to the summit, the mountain became almost as popular as Everest and had the record of most ascends after the world’s highest peak. Although Cho Oyu is rarely climbed from Nepal, routes to its summit do exist.

Location: The Annapurna region. Part of the Dhaulagiri Himalayan range

Dhaulagiri is the seventh highest mountain in the world and has its name derived from a Sanskrit word “Dhwala” meaning “dazzling, white, and beautiful” and “Giri” meaning “mountain”. Dhaulagiri I is the seventh highest mountain in the world is a part of the Mount Dhaulagiri massif that extends from the Kali Gandaki River all the way to Bheri. This was first Himalayan climb supported by an airplane, although the plane was subsequently abandoned on the mountain. You can enjoy the Dhaulagiri South Base Camp with Dhaulagiri Sanctuary Trek.

Annapurna I

 

The Elevation: 8,156 meters

Location: Gorkha, Part of the Mansiri Himalayan range

First Ascenders: Artur Hajzer, Gyalzen Norbu and Toshio Imanishi

This mountain range is also called the mountain of spirits and intellect as many saints and gurus are found here chanting and meditating. Mount Manaslu is the eight-highest mountain in the world and is a part of the Mansiri Himalayan massif. Mount Manaslu is the highest peak in the Gorkha District and is located about 64 kilometers east of the Annapurna Mountains. Mount Manaslu is also famously regarded as “a wall of snow and ice hanging in the sky”. Important peaks surrounding Manaslu include the Ngadi Chuli, Himalchuli and the Baudha. A glacial pool known as the Larkya La, lying at an elevation of 5,106 meters also lies north of Manaslu.

An enormous Himalayan massif, the tenth highest mountain in the world, Annapurna in 1950, it becomes the first 8,000-meter mountain to be successfully climbed, 

It is located east of a great gorge cut through the Himalayan by the Kali Gandhi river, the mountain has glaciers on its western and northwestern slopes, which drain into this gorge.

 The mountain also lies within the Annapurna Conservation Area and is famous for Circumbulating trekking journeys. The Annapurna Sanctuary, a famous protected area in the region, leads to the south face of Annapurna I. 

About two-thirds of all trekkers in Nepal tend to visit the Annapurna region due to its beauty and easy terrains.

Annapurna II

The Elevation: 7,957 meters

Location: Khumbu. Part of the Mahalangur Himalayan range

First Ascenders:  Pasang Phutar Sherpa, Yukihiko Kato and Kiyoto Sakaizawa

The fifteenth-highest peak in the world and is an obscure mountain situated amidst more prominent and well-known peaks Mount Cho Oyu and Mount Everest. The heavily glaciated peak of Gyachung Kang is quite beautiful and the mountain resembles a velvety baldachin that looks like it is covering secrets underneath.

Location: Annapurna region. Part of the Annapurna Mountain massif

The Annapurna II is a part of the Annapurna mountain massif and is situated on the easternmost side of the Himalayan range. Annapurna II is the second-highest mountain of the Annapurna Himalayan range and it can be seen from Pokhara valley. You can not only experience the beautiful and grand mountain ranges but also the people of this place are really humble and kind-hearted.
